Steps to Building Your Luxury Home in the Mountains

Build Your Dream Home At The Cliffs

There is something special about being able to wake up and drink your morning coffee with a view of the blue-toned Appalachian Mountains as far as the eye can see. What could make this even more special? Knowing that your home in the mountains is a space that is entirely your own — a space that you helped design and hand-picked every detail.

Building a luxury home is one of life’s most rewarding milestones. For some, it may seem like a daunting task, but at The Cliffs, we have perfected the process to give you a smooth experience as you build your dream home in the Carolina mountains. Let’s learn about the steps you can take to turn your dream home into a reality.

Discover The Cliffs

The most important step in building your dream home is deciding where to build it. At The Cliffs, there is a world of possibilities to explore! Home to seven spectacular mountain and lake communities, each offers its members a unique set of amenities. Our first community was built on the top of Glassy Mountain, and now is one of three communities in The Mountain Region at The Cliffs. This region offers miles of breathtaking views of the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains.

Another community, nestled in the mountains of the Asheville Region, near the charming city of Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway, is The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. Bordering Pisgah National Forest, this region is great for outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking and camping.

Our other three communities can be found on the shores of Lake Keowee, in Upstate South Carolina. At The Lake Region, you can enjoy life on the water with views of the mountains in the distance. From kayaking to fishing, the activities offered here will allow you to enjoy the serenity of the lake all year round.

Each of our communities have state-of-the-art wellness centers and premier private golf courses where members can remain active and connect with other members of The Cliffs. When you become a member, you will have access to each of the Clubs and the unique amenities they offer.

Once you have explored each region and decided which community at The Cliffs best fits your lifestyle, it is time to start looking at possible homesites to start building the luxury home of your dreams.

Find Your Perfect Homesite

Finding the perfect homesite is a crucial step in the building process. It can take time to search through the possible options for the exact location you want for your new home.

When you start to search, you are going to want to think about your lifestyle and the places you  want to be close to. If you’re an avid golfer, you may want to have your homesite located near the course. Maybe, you want your home to be tucked away in a quiet part of the forest where you can enjoy the sounds of nature and beauty of the land.

Also, think about the climate that you want. At The Cliffs, each community has a unique climate depending on the elevation of the land. Oneday, it may be snowing at the top of Glassy Mountain, while it’s sunny down in The Cliffs Valley. Talk with our experienced Real Estate Sales Team about the area you may be interested in and the climate you can expect.

One of the most crucial steps is to walk the land with your architect or builder. Get a feel for the area and see if it is a place you could see yourself living. Sometimes you aren’t able to visualize what you want until you see it with your own eyes. By walking around the land, you may be inspired and even come up with new ideas for your custom mountain home.

Design Your Luxury Home

Next comes the most exciting step of the home building process: designing! Turning the vision you have in your head into a visual design you can physically see on paper. Here you will start to work with an architect to create the layout for your home. It is crucial to communicate clearly and often with your architect about budget, materials and design elements for the project.

In order to make this part of the process a little easier, have a list of the most important elements that you want to include in your design. Think about the flow of the space, the materials that you want to incorporate and the functionality for your lifestyle. This will help your architect understand your style and know exactly what to integrate in the design.

Over the course of the design process, some of the elements you want may need to be moved around due to building codes and other factors. By working closely with your architect you can come up with solutions that still work with your vision.

Choose a Quality Builder

The next step is to choose a builder for your new home. This will be the person responsible for overseeing the project and construction process. You will want to choose someone who has experience working in the area. Homesites in the mountains can be a challenging task for any builder. You want to work with someone you can trust to handle the situation confidently.

At The Cliffs, we have created the Preferred Builders Program, making it easy to find and choose a builder that you can trust. We have hand-picked these builders to work with us based on their professional experience, integrity and financial condition. They know our standards for quality and attention to detail at The Cliffs, so you can rest assured, they have passed our test.

Now that you have chosen who you want to work with, all that’s left to do is to start building! Soon, you will be able to move into the luxury mountain home you helped make a reality and enjoy all of the simple pleasures that come with living in the Carolina Mountains.
